Services

A special education advocate will help parents make sure a child's special education needs are met. The advocate will plan, prepare, and support parents during each step of the IEP and 504 Plan process by:

  • Helping parents understand available services, interpret test results, and work with the schools to create an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)

  • Reviewing educational records and assessment reports

  • Addressing identified learning challenges and overlooked factors that may be affecting the child's ability to learn

  • Aiding in obtaining the child's eligibility for Special Education services

  • Providing insight as to parents’ rights regarding participation in their child's education

  • Empowering parents to give a voice to their child and to collaborate with the school to secure the most comprehensive version of their child's Individualized Education Plan

  • Advising parents about goals, accommodations, services, and programs that meet their child's individual needs.

  • Drafting written requests, responses, and complaints to the school district

  • Drafting written complaints to the State Department of Education

  • Preparing parents for IEP and 504 meetings by reviewing student materials (i.e., assessments, report cards, etc.) and gathering supporting evidence from outside resources (i.e., tutors, doctors, etc.)

  • Checking special education documents for accuracy and completion during the IEP and 504 processes

  • Providing guidance and support navigating the In Home Support Services (IHSS) process
